Most people don’t think about their commercial vehicle test (CVRT) unless it’s on their doorstep. It’s something you book, get through, and forget about for another year. If the vehicle feels fine and there are no obvious issues, it’s easy to assume there’s nothing to worry about.

Failing a CVRT test isn’t particularly unusual. In fact, we see it happen quite a lot. So, that means you need to be prepared for an eventuality that will see you provided with a CVRT testing fail report. The problem is that a lot of people don’t fully understand what the report is telling them.

If you’re operating a commercial vehicle in Ireland, or indeed a fleet of vans or trucks, a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) is something you can’t afford to ignore. It’s official proof that your van has passed its CVRT test - a legal requirement for driving it on Ireland’s public roads.

Vintage commercial vehicles are a proper part of Irish road culture. Restored trucks, classic vans, old workhorses kept in good nick by enthusiasts and collectors - once a vehicle hits 30 years from its original registration date, it’s vintage and with that comes a slightly different set of rules around the CVRT testing involved.

Vehicles in Ireland get modified all the time. Campervan conversions, and changes to seating are just two examples, and once you start altering a vehicle from how it left the factory, you're into territory that affects safety, legality and registration.

Vehicles get changed for all sorts of reasons. A van might get fitted out for specialist work, or have its seating reconfigured. Driving an HGV isn't like driving a car, as trucks get put through gruelling work every day. They take long trips with heavy loads, along rough roads. It means that brakes, tyres, suspensions and all those other important parts wear out. It’s why HGV 12 Week Maintenance Inspections exist.

If you run a van or truck in Ireland, roadside inspections are something you'll come across eventually. An inspector can pull you over to check your commercial vehicle meets safety standards at any time, and while it might not be top of mind every day, being ready for it means avoiding unnecessary hassle and time off the road.

Every van, jeep, and truck in Ireland that’s involved in commerce needs a Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) once a year. It’s what proves the vehicle’s safe to drive, meaning it has brakes that stop effectively, steering that responds, and lights that work - to name just a few parameters. No certificate, no road use.

When a commercial vehicle goes in for its HCV CVRT, the outcome isn’t always as simple as “pass” or “fail.” Inspectors look for faults, and if they find any, they put them into categories that explain how serious the issues are. Needless to say, understanding what's covered in them is important.

Ireland’s roads are full of commercial vehicles, whether it’s vans making deliveries or buses carrying passengers. Every one of them has to be kept safe and legal, which is where the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) comes in.

Getting your heavy goods vehicle ready for the RSA driving test isn’t just about your own driving skills, as the vehicle itself needs to meet specific standards before the test can even go ahead, which means either passing a bus test or HCV CVRT.
