The Society of the Irish Motor Industry: Keeping Standards High

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (a.k.a. SIMI) has been part of Irish motoring for more than a hundred years. It represents garages, dealers, and Commercial Vehicle Testing centres that keep vehicles safe and legal. The aim hasn’t changed much since the start: do the job properly and keep standards high.

SIMI links the people who repair and test vehicles with the people who set the rules. It works with the Road Safety Authority, insurance groups, and government departments so that everyone is working from the same page.

Members include CVRT stations, HCV Test operators, and fleet maintenance crews who deal with everything from vans to long-haul trucks.

How SIMI Supports Testing & Maintenance

A lot of the work SIMI does never makes the news. It runs training, updates testing methods, and explains regulation changes so workshops aren’t caught out. That help filters straight into the lanes where vehicles are checked.

Its reach shows up anywhere inspections happen:

  • Routine Commercial Vehicle Testing for fleet operators

  • Bus Testing and HCV Testing before certificates are issued

  • Vehicle Engineers Reports when a vehicle has been altered

  • Ongoing checks through the Periodic Vehicle Inspection system

  • Regular Tail Lift Inspections under safety law

The goal of SIMI presence in these processes is simple - to catch faults early and keep commercial vehicles on the road, not in the workshop.

Road Safety in Practice

For SIMI, road safety is the everyday work of mechanics, testers, and inspectors who find problems before they turn into accidents. The society pushes for solid inspection habits and clear sign-off procedures, so a pass actually means something.

SIMI makes sure testers keep learning as vehicle technology evolves. New systems appear every year, and staying up to date is what keeps Heavy Commercial Vehicles, buses, and fleet vans safe for the people who rely on them.
