HGV Daily Walkaround Checks: What Drivers Need to Know

When you drive the same truck every day, it’s easy to assume you’ll
notice if something is wrong. However, a damaged tyre, faulty light or
loose trailer connection isn’t always obvious from inside the cab.

That’s why the daily walkaround check matters. Commercial vehicle
owners, users and drivers must make sure the truck and trailer are
checked before they’re used on a public road. The check can be done by
a driver, mechanic or anyone trained to carry it out properly.

What Should You Be Looking For?

A walkaround check doesn’t take long. The best approach is to follow
the same route around the vehicle every time, rather than just having
a quick look and hoping everything is fine.

The main things to check include:

Tyres and wheels – visible damage, low pressure, worn tread or
signs of loose wheel nuts
Lights and reflectors – working properly, clean and easy to see
Mirrors, windows and wipers – secure, working and giving the
driver a clear view
Leaks and bodywork – leaking fluids, loose panels, damaged steps
or insecure doors
Load security – straps, curtains, doors and tailboards properly secured
Trailer connections – coupling, air lines, electrical
connections and safety clips
Number plates and markings – fitted, clean and readable
Dashboard warnings – any warning light or sign that something isn’t right

If the vehicle has a tail lift, crane or other equipment fitted, that
needs to be included too.

What if You Find a Problem?

A defect shouldn’t just be mentioned and forgotten about. It must be
reported and recorded, including what the problem is, when it was
found and whether any temporary action was taken.

All reported defects must be followed up. If the problem could make
the vehicle dangerous, it shouldn’t be driven until it has been
inspected and, if needed, repaired by a suitably qualified person.
Details of the corrective action taken must also be included in the
vehicle’s maintenance record.

A daily walkaround doesn’t replace planned maintenance, professional
inspections or the annual CVRT. It simply gives you the chance to find
a visible problem before the vehicle goes out on the road.
