What a CVRT Test Fail Report Really Means
Failing a CVRT test isn’t particularly unusual. In fact, we see it happen quite a lot. So, that means you need to be prepared for an eventuality that will see you provided with a CVRT testing fail report. The problem is that a lot of people don’t fully understand what the report is telling them.
A fail test report obviously means the vehicle didn’t meet the required safety standards on the day of the test. It also tells you why it failed and what needs to happen before you can drive legally.
What a Commercial Vehicle Test Fail Report Tells You
A fail report from your Commercial Vehicle CVRT isn’t just a pass or fail thing. It lays out exactly what’s wrong and how serious those issues are. Some faults are minor, others are more serious, and some mean the vehicle shouldn’t be on the road at all.
In general, defects are grouped by severity, so you can see straight away what needs urgent attention:
Dangerous defects - an immediate risk, and the vehicle shouldn’t be driven at all
Major defects - serious issues that affect safety and must be fixed before passing
Minor defects - not immediately dangerous, but still need to be repaired
Advisory items - not a failure, but something that could become a problem later
So, you get a full list of faults that must be corrected before a retest, as well as information on the deadline for coming back. That’s usually within 21 days, and the rule is that if it’s still technically road legal, it shouldn’t be driven unnecessarily before the retest happens.
A lot of the time, the report highlights things that weren’t obvious beforehand. You can be driving a vehicle every day and not realise there’s a problem building underneath. That’s exactly why the report matters.
