CRW Expiry Dates: What Commercial Vehicle Owners Need to Know

If you’re operating a commercial vehicle in Ireland, or indeed a fleet of vans or trucks, a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) is something you can’t afford to ignore. It’s official proof that your van has passed its CVRT test - a legal requirement for driving it on Ireland’s public roads.

Most CRWs are valid for 12 months, but the expiry date doesn't always work the way people expect. It's not always calculated from the day you actually passed the test, and that catches plenty of operators off guard when renewal comes around sooner than anticipated.

Why Your CRW Might Expire Sooner Than You Expect

This is where most of the confusion comes from. If you pass your commercial vehicle test on time, the certificate runs for a full year. However, if you test late, the expiry date gets calculated from when the test was originally due. The crucial thing is that it’s not from the day you actually sat it.

Putting your commercial vehicle testing off doesn't buy you more time. It just means your next renewal date arrives earlier than you'd expect, and you're back in the same position again sooner.

A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • A CRW is valid for 12 months when the test is completed on schedule

  • Testing late shortens the certificate period - the clock starts from the original due date, not the test date

  • You can test early - booking slightly ahead of your due date is a straightforward way to stay on top of it

  • Driving without a valid CRW is illegal - there's no grace period for commercial vehicles on public roads

So, while you do have the freedom to book your commercial vehicle CVRT, holding off because you think it will buy you more time just isn’t true.
