CRW and Vintage Vehicles: What Owners Need to Know

Vintage commercial vehicles are a proper part of Irish road culture. Restored trucks, classic vans, old workhorses kept in good nick by enthusiasts and collectors - once a vehicle hits 30 years from its original registration date, it’s vintage and with that comes a slightly different set of rules around the CVRT testing involved.

Most owners know their vehicle needs to be safe and legal. What catches people out is assuming the rules are the same as for modern commercial vehicles. They're not, and the differences are worth understanding.

How Age Affects CVRT Testing & CRW Requirements

The CVRT test schedule for vintage vehicles depends on two things: how old the vehicle is and what it's being used for. Between 30 and 39 years old, a vehicle used for non-commercial purposes typically moves to a two-year testing cycle rather than annual, provided a declaration of non-commercial use is signed.

Once a vehicle passes the 40-year mark, it may be exempt from roadworthiness testing altogether - again, as long as it's not being used commercially. That last point matters more than people sometimes realise.

When Vintage Vehicles Still Need a CVRT Test

Age alone doesn't determine whether CVRT testing applies - how it’s used does. Here's a succinct look at how it breaks down:

  • Vehicles under 30 years old must still pass an annual CVRT test

  • Vehicles aged 30-39 used for non-commercial purposes are usually tested every two years

  • Vehicles over 40 years old are generally exempt from testing if used privately

  • Commercial use overrides everything - if a vintage vehicle carries passengers or goods for hire or reward, annual testing applies regardless of age

So if you're running a vintage truck for any kind of commercial purpose, the exemptions don't apply. The vehicle needs to be tested like any other working commercial vehicle.

Argent Equipment - Keeping Your Vintage Vehicles Roadworthy

An exemption from CVRT testing isn't an exemption from responsibility. Owners are still legally required to keep their vehicle in a roadworthy condition at all times, and the absence of a mandatory test doesn't change that. For most vintage vehicle owners, arranging periodic inspections makes sense anyway.

It's a straightforward way to catch issues early. At Argent Equipment, we provide CVRT testing and support for commercial and specialist vehicles of all kinds. So, if you're unsure where your vehicle stands on testing requirements, call us today on 01 572 6500 or book online.
