Commercial Vehicle Test Advice - CRW Expiry Dates Explained

Welcome to the latest Argent Equipment blog series that looks into all things relating to commercial vehicle testing. Today, we look at the Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW), a document that confirms that commercial vehicles in Ireland (trucks, buses, and trailers) meet the necessary safety and environmental standards for use on the road.

More specifically, we'll be looking at the fact that CRWs are not a one-time thing. Rather, they are valid for 12 months and will expire if not renewed. Here's what you need to know.

CRWs Must Be Renewed EVERY 12 Months

CRWs remain valid for 12 months from the date it's due, not from the date it was taken. As such, if you booked your HCV CVRT late, you're not going to get a full year. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) oversees all commercial vehicle testing in Ireland, and it takes into account the obligation of yearly testing, meaning that delaying your HCV test will not benefit you.

When buying any new commercial vehicle, it's important to note that it might not have a valid CRW, so when you put it in for its test, you'll get less than the full 12 months.

The Obligations of Commercial Vehicle Owners

It is a legal obligation for commercial vehicle owners in Ireland to have their vehicles tested every year under section 5 of the RSA's Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Act 2012. As such, it's illegal to use a vehicle of this type on a public road without a valid CRW.

There are no exceptions to this rule- even for vehicles that are temporarily off the road -  and this kind of offence may result in a class A fine (Up to €5,000). It's also possible to have your vehicle tested up to 1 month early without altering the test anniversary date.
