Why Vehicle Type Approval Is Essential for Your Fleet

If you’re managing a fleet of vehicles in Ireland, ensuring that each one undergoes commercial vehicle testing so it’s roadworthy and meets is good practice. However, it’s much more than that, as it’s also a legal requirement. That’s because in order to drive on Irish roads, they must undergo vehicle type approval.

It’s something that certifies that the vehicle in question meets all safety, environmental, and technical standards set by Irish regulations. Without type approval, you could be hit with legal penalties while also costing you time and reducing safety levels.

So, What Is Vehicle Type Approval?

In Ireland, vehicle type approval is required for all vehicles before they can be registered. This process ensures that vehicles meet national standards for safety, emissions, and environmental impact. Within it, there are a couple of different types of approval processes depending on the vehicle’s use, whether it’s being imported, modified, or manufactured.

  • Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) - This is for vehicles that are individually manufactured or imported, and it’s critical for custom-built vehicles like those undergoing tachograph installation or needing vehicle modification engineers' reports.

An IVA checks that each vehicle complies with regulations, including safety standards for commercial vehicles. Once passed, the vehicle can be legally used on the roads.

  • National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA) - For smaller manufacturers who produce fewer than 500 vehicles per year, National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA) is a more simplified approval process.

This is especially beneficial for those in industries that require specific modifications, such as periodic vehicle inspections or speed limiter centre installations.
