Motorhome, Motor Caravan & Camper Van Testing Explained

Are you lucky enough to enjoy the freedom that comes with owning a campervan or motorhome in Ireland? If so, it does come with the responsibility of having it put through commercial vehicle testing - even if you don't use it for business.

That's what we focus on here in this article, as we look at some of the finer points of this legal requirement so that you don't unknowingly break RSA's rules on the subject.

You'll Need a CVRT, Not an NCT

Essentially, a motor caravan is one that features storage, cooking facilities, sleeping accommodation (possibly converted seats), seats and a table - as a minimum. This equipment should be rigidly fixed into place, although a removable table can be used.

So, campervan testing falls under commercial vehicle testing, rather than a standard NCT test you'd have for your private car. As such, you'll need to present it periodically to a CVRT testing centre (like ours at Argent Equipment). Here are a number of important things you should also be aware of.

  • The person presenting the camper or motorhome needs to present ID (Passport, valid driving licence or Public Services Card).

  • Campers under three years old don't need testing, whereas those between 4-9 years should be tested every two years and annually when aged 10-29 years.

  • Vintage motor caravans that are more than 40 years old and are not being used commercially are exempt and do not need to be tested.

  • Vehicles that have been converted into motor caravans (that are four years old and above) should be tested in line with the conversion date.

  • The campervan testing must be carried out by a suitably qualified, experienced, certified and insured individual (SQI).

There is no advantage to be gained by delaying your campervan CVRT, as your certificate of roadworthiness (CRW) is valid from the date it was due, not the date you passed the test. For example, if you're two months late and your camper needs testing biannually, your certificate will only be valid for 22 months, not 24.
