CVRT & Commercial Vehicle Testing in Ireland FAQs
When it comes to LCV and HCV CVRT testing, a lot of people have the same questions, but most websites give you the long-winded, official version that does more to confuse you, rather than provide some much-needed clarity.
At Argent, we talk to drivers and fleet owners every day, and we like to educate our customers on everything we do. So, here’s a straight-up FAQ article based on what people actually ask.
Q - What is an HCV CVRT Test?
A - The commercial vehicle CVRT is the annual test that checks whether your commercial vehicle is safe and roadworthy. It applies to most vans, trucks, buses, ambulances, and any vehicle being used for work. It’s not optional—you need a valid pass to tax the vehicle and keep it legal on Irish roads.
Q - Do you test specialist vehicles?
A - Yes. We carry out ADR testing, bus CVRT, ambulance testing, and HCV CVRT. We’re fully equipped for both light and heavy commercial vehicle categories, and we test for private, public, and business use.
Q - What if I’m not sure what test I need?
A - Just call us and tell us what you drive. Whether it’s a standard van or something more complex like an ADR tanker or coach, we’ll tell you exactly which commercial vehicle test applies—no guesswork, no wasted trips.
Q - What happens if my vehicle fails?
A - You’ll be given a full report outlining what needs fixing. Once the repairs are done, you can come back for a retest—usually at a reduced fee, provided it’s within 21 days of the original test.
Q - What about modified vehicles?
A - For anything that’s been changed—axle weights, seating layout, fuel system—you may need a Vehicle Engineers Report, an SQI Report, or a Vehicle Modification Engineers Report before we can test it. Call ahead and we’ll tell you what applies.
Q - Is the test needed to renew tax?
A - Yes. If your commercial vehicle doesn’t have a valid commercial vehicle CVRT, you won’t be able to tax it. It’s a legal requirement whether the vehicle is used full-time or just occasionally.
Q - Can I book online?
A - Yes, you can book directly through our website. But if you prefer to talk to someone, we’re happy to do it by phone too. A lot of customers still prefer a quick call, especially if there’s paperwork involved.
Q - Do I need to bring anything on the day?
A - Just your ID, your logbook (VRC), and your current insurance disc. If your vehicle needs any reports—like for ADR testing or modifications—bring those too. We’ll let you know ahead of time if anything specific is required.
