Reporting Unsafe Trucks and Buses Confidentially
Anyone on the road in Ireland can spot when something’s not right, as it’s often so obvious that even members of the public can tell something is wrong. It might be a bus running with dodgy brakes, a truck with no CVRT disc, or drivers clearly ignoring their tachograph hours.
While it might feel like interfering to get yourself involved, reporting these instances actually serves to make the roads in Ireland safer. What’s more, the RSA has a system for confidential complaints, which means you can raise the alarm without anyone knowing who made the call.
Here’s what you need to know.
What You Should Report
We’re not talking about minor issues here. What the RSA actually wants to know about are things that put people in danger, like:
Vehicles being used with no valid Commercial Vehicle CVRT
Driver hours being pushed past the limit, or tachographs being fiddled with
Operators hauling goods with no proper licence
These aren’t small slip-ups. They represent the kinds of issues that cost lives, and they undercut the operators who stick to the rules.
How You Can Do It
You’ve three options when reporting things you’ve witnessed, and none of them are complicated:
Ring the enforcement team on 091 872 600, or the confidential line on 091 872 647.
Write to RSA, Clonfert House, Bride Street, Loughrea, Co. Galway.
Use the online form on the RSA site.
Whichever way you go, your name will go no further than the person taking the call, meaning there will be no repercussions.
Details make all the difference, so be sure to note the issue you’re reporting, the reg plate, the operator’s name if you know it, and when it was. You can give your own contact info if you’re comfortable, but it stays under wraps.
Once the call is made, the RSA logs it, and an inspector looks into it. They’ll check the vehicle or operator quietly, so you won’t get dragged in, and the driver or company won’t know who flagged them.
If You See It, Report It, Because it Matters
Unsafe trucks and buses don’t just break rules -they put lives on the line. Calling it out keeps the roads safer and makes sure good operators aren’t losing out to corner-cutters. If you’re ever unsure about what to do, just keep that in mind.
